HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez is close to inking a deal to be an "American Idol" judge, people with knowledge of the negotiations said.

"Idol" producers have said they consider Lopez one of the best mentors on the program -- plus she's a fan, TMZ.com reported Friday.

In July, it was reported Lopez would fill one of the seats vacated by Ellen DeGeneres, who decided to leave after just one season, and Simon Cowell. DeGeneres was criticized for her lack of critiquing skills.

"Idol" sources told TMZ.com the show's producers said they believe Lopez could help re-energize the show, which has suffered in ratings during the last few seasons.
