WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. soccer officials said Tuesday they're going all-out to impress a team of FIFA inspectors assessing the country's bid for a future World Cup.

U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati, who is leading the American effort to land the 2018 or 2022 tournament, told The Washington Post his goal is to convince a group of six inspectors representing soccer's international governing body that the United States is sufficiently excited about soccer.

"The primary purpose is to show that we can meet all the standards necessary to put on a first-class World Cup," Gulati said. "We also want to show FIFA that the country is passionate about the game, serious about hosting and engaged in the process."

The newspaper said the FIFA inspectors will be taken to the Washington Monument and asked to envision the National Mall filled with soccer fans, among other activities, such as inspecting FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

The group spent Tuesday in New York touring the New Meadowlands Stadium, part of whirlwind, four-day U.S. tour.

A decision on the World Cup sites is due Dec. 2.
