SAN DIEGO, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Mat Latos went seven strong innings Tuesday to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The win was the second in a row after 10 straight losses for the Padres and kept them a game ahead of the second-place Giants in the National League West.
Latos (14-5) allowed one run on five hits and struck out 10 before turning the game over to Mike Adams and Heath Bell, who struck out four in 1 2/3 innings for his 39th save.
Adrian Gonzalez had two of the Padres' five hits and drove in a run. Aaron Cunningham had the other San Diego RBI.
Clayton Kershaw (11-10) also turned in a strong performance in his start for Los Angeles. Kershaw allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings and struck out six.
Rafael Furcal drove in the Dodgers' run with two outs in the sixth inning to cut the Padres' lead to 2-1.
